Pistol Range Night

The new Steel Plate league is starting to catch on. This can be a fun alternative to just “pinking” down range. Come on down to watch the event to see what it is all about and the shooting sequences that are followed. Also make certain to become aware of the safety routine that is part of this league.

During the shoots, both the Rifle and Pistol ranges are used. The league matches consist of 8 different set-ups of five targets each. Targets are set up in specific patterns and consist of either 10 or 12 inch round or 24×18 inch rectangular plates, depending on the set-up. The target stands are set at specific distances, that vary with the set-up. Each set-up has a one target stand painted Orange, this is the “Stop” plate. When the shooter hits this, the timer stops! Shooters take turns in the set-up (one at a time for each station) with the object of hitting each plate once before hitting the stop plate. The shooter MUST try to hit each plate before hitting the Stop plate. A missed plate receives a time penalty, but not shooting the stop plate incurs a significant time penalty.

A typical STEEL CHALLENGE stage is shown in the diagram below. As the shooter, you will stand in the box and when instructed by the Range Officer you will “load and make ready”. Once ready to shoot, you will indicate to the Range Officer that you are in fact ready, and the Range Officer will signal for you to draw your pistol and shoot five plates (shooting the stop plate last) as fast as you can. Your time will be recorded by the timer and you’ll repeat this five times with your highest time (longest/worst) discarded.

SP Setup 1

This is a fun and challenging hand gun challenge.

What’s needed-

A hand gun (revolver or semi auto, but if a revolver, either a swing out cylinder with speed loaders or multiple cylinders will be required for quick reloading during rounds).

At least 2, but preferably three or four magazines or speed loaders (if a single action without a swing out cylinder, then 2 or 3 cylinders). If you only have two or three magazines, etc., don’t worry, we’ll get someone to help you reload.

A good eye, and fast reflexes!

Like any shooting activity, Eye and Ear protection are required on the range.

That’s it! Oh yes, an attitude of fun always helps and safety is a must !
